Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Is animal assisted coaching the same as animal assisted therapy?
No. Animal assisted coaching is coaching-focused and is usually concerned with personal development, wellbeing, learning, performance, confidence, leadership or goal attainment. Animal assisted therapy is usually delivered within a therapeutic or clinical framework. Practitioners should be clear about the nature, boundaries and limits of their work.

Do I need specialist training to practise animal assisted coaching?
Practitioners should have appropriate coaching training and should also develop relevant knowledge of animal behaviour, welfare, ethics, risk awareness and the specific context in which they work.

Can any animal be included in coaching?
Not necessarily. The suitability of an animal depends on the animal’s welfare, temperament, training, health, environment and the nature of the coaching activity. The animal’s wellbeing should always be central.

Is the Network an accrediting body?
No. The Network is not a professional accrediting body. It is an informal network and professional community of practice and does not currently provide accreditation, certification or regulatory approval.

Can I promote my course or event?
Relevant events and resources may be shared where they support the aims of the Network. Excessive or unrelated promotion may be removed.

Can students join?
Yes. Students and early-career practitioners with a genuine interest in animal assisted coaching are welcome.

Does the Network provide supervision?
The Network may share information about supervision and reflective practice, but practitioners should ensure that any supervision they access is appropriate to their professional background, client group, practice setting and use of animals.
